Before the invention of the postage stamp, it was difficult to send the letter to another country. The sender paid for the letter to travel in his or her country. Then the person in another country paid for the rest of the trip. If the letter crossed several countries, the problem was worst. Rolland Hill had the idea of the postage stamp with glue on a back. The british post office made the first stamp in 1840. They were the Penny Black and TuppenBlue. A person bought a stamp and put it on the letter. The post office delivered the letter. When the sender received the letter, they didn't do anything. The postage was prepaid.
